Dozens of nomadic Indians have returned to the Amazonian rain forest in southern Colombia, after the country’s four-decade old civil war forced them to flee their ancestral homeland.

But the Nukak Maku tribal members face an uncertain future.

Driving down a pothole-filled dirt road, huddled in six cargo trucks that normally carry earth and rock, the tribe is aware of the dangers they still face upon their return.

STORYLINE :

The tribe, numbering around 200, began its exodus from the jungle three years ago.

In March 2006, the last remaining tribal members decamped to a squalid tenement outside San Jose del Guaviare, a small city 280 kilometres (170 miles) southwest of Bogota, trading in their itinerant lifestyle for a sedentary one.

But now they’re returning to the jungle.

The government insists they’ll protect the Nukaks.
