I got banned from Amazon, and I live to tell the tale Never ever sell stuff imported from the Philippines on Amazon. That may seem like one odd statement, but you wouldn’t think so once I have told you my story.
I am Casey, working as a Marketing Manager in a small startup. It was a job I loved, but I was looking for additional sources of income, but with as little effort as possible. You see, I had to spend a lot of time at the Startup, which is why I didn’t have time for any other job. I loved the job anyway, and couldn’t find any other suitable Jobs, which is why I was looking for minimal effort income.
I was thought about Freelancing, but that was time-consuming as you had to spend quite selling yourselves and marketing before you actually get your first sale. This wasn’t working for me.
Then I thought about starting a Blog, which could make for a nice source of Income. But then I learned the hard truth, you won’t be generating acceptable income without a popular Blog. And a Popular Blog means regular content Production, Marketing and more. While ultimately it would be worth it, I would go crazy trying to manage two jobs at once.
I then read about a person who had successfully quit his day job and was making a living flipping items on Amazon. I was interested, as it seemed pretty simple.
I tried unsuccessfully selling several items, when I finally found the perfect item to sell on Amazon. I had intended it to only be a temporary solution, but imported Crafts and Goods from Philippines were seemingly the perfect Solution.
This was because I had moved to Philippines for a few months to oversee the operations of our Startup. This meant that I can buy stuff in demand in Philippines, and mark it up to sell on Amazon. Something I very quickly discovered that Philippine Culture, I.e their craft goods were in good demand, which is why I started selling these.
Soon I rose up the ranks and was making a nice income. Of course, I didn’t foolishly quit my day job, and this came in use later.
Within a few weeks, I was receiving notices from Amazon to remove these imported Items. I ignored these, as I, blinded by the success, assumed that I wasn’t selling anything against Amazon’s policies. Turns out, I indeed was violating a few policies regarding the importing of goods into the US. I also got a bit carried away and sold things for much more than they really were.
Thirdly, I messed up the descriptions. I had a system in place for such Products: I had a central file where I stored the general descriptions for different types of Products. While this system worked well in the beginning, later, when I was selling Products spanning various types, this System broke down. I was looking to be more efficient, which is why I didn’t pay much attention, but I interchanged the descriptions of one type of Product with another. This became a violation of Amazon’s Policy to accurately represent my Products.
I was extremely close to getting suspended, and the clincher was when my gig at Philippines got over and I moved back to the US. I was occupied by some urgent work, which is why I forgot to turn off the Philippines Items. I didn’t have any items to ship, and even if I had, I would have forgot. Soon, poor reviews started piling up one after the another.
Amazon, noticing this and previous behavior on my Account finally suspended my Account. I was sad, but I was thankful that I didn’t quit my job. Else this would have been much worse and I would have been on the Street.
If you are selling, then always make sure you aren’t violating any Amazon Policy, even the obscure ones. Also, never ever quit your Job even if you are making sufficient Money. You never know what happens, which is why it is good to have a stable income source to fall back on.
