The megalithic alignments at Carnac, in Brittany, point precisely towards the mouth of the Amazon river. This is interesting in light of the theory of Jim Bailey (1919-2000), founder of the African magazine ‘Drum’, that people travelled from Europe to America in the bronze age, to bring back supplies of copper and tin. Land-based alignments can serve as backsights helping sailors maintain the right course as they leave port — a well-known technique among traditional navigators. While the surviving stones at Carnac seem unlikely to have been navigational aids in themselves, they may have picked up their general orientation from the actual aids — stones or other landmarks now lost to vandalism or rising sea levels.
