Five Questions to Ask About A Store’s Return Policy

Every consumer wants to be as informed as possible, but with every store’s return policy slightly differing from the last, it can be hard to keep track of all the information you need. Here are the five “Do”s you should ask before making purchases at any store where you shop.

Do you offer returns?

Some stores don’t even offer returns, especially when it comes to sale or final-price items. Even if your item hasn’t been marked down, some stores have very particular return policies. For instance, while some stores may have a no-questions-asked return policy, others may require that there be some defect with the product in order for a refund to be granted. Similarly, some stores will allow you to return an item if you changed your mind about it or tried it out and don’t like it, and others will not. It’s best to ask no matter what your situation is.

Do the tags need to be on?

Many stores require this if you choose to return an item. For clothes, tags may need to still be affixed in order for them to accept the return. Shoes typically must look unworn on the soles, and often it is required that other products be unopened and in their original packaging.

Do I need a receipt?

Most of the time, a receipt is required in order for them to give you the full amount back. If you are giving something as a present, gift receipts are ideal because they allow the gift to be returned if the recipient doesn’t like it, while ensuring that the full amount is refunded.

Do you have a time limit for returns?

The typical time limit for most stores is that returns must be made within 30 days from the date of purchase. However, some big-box stores offer up to 60- or 90-day return periods, and smaller stores often offer a much shorter time period. Inquire about the particulars so that you aren’t caught off-guard.

Do you offer store credit?

Even if you don’t meet a store’s requirements for returning something and getting a full refund, they still may be able to offer you store credit. Although some stores don’t state this policy outright, they will often give you this option if you’ve surpassed the time limit, removed the tags, or don’t have the receipt. You’ll never know unless you ask!

Although you may think that there’s no need to inquire about a store’s policy for returns, you never know what will happen down the road that might require you to know this information. When you shop at a store, it’s policies affect you whether you’re aware of them or not. Be an informed consumer by asking these five important questions.
