LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII markiert die Rückkehr der Serienheldin Lightning in eine Welt, die nur noch 13 Tagen vor der totalen Zerstörung steht. Das neue Bildmaterial bietet einen ersten Blick auf das actionreicher gewordene Kampfsystem, mit dem der Spieler die direkte Kontrolle über seinen Charakter hat. Zusätzlich ist das Gebiet „Luxerion” aus dem Spiel das erste Mal zu sehen.

Für die musikalische Gestaltung in LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII konnten erneut Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta und Mitsuto Suzuki gewonnen werden. Die erfolgreichen Komponisten haben in der Vergangenheit schon gemeinsam an dem hochgeschätzten Soundtrack des Vorgängers FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 gearbeitet. Die Musik im neuen Trailer wurde von Masashi Hamauzu komponiert und nennt sich „Crimson Blitz”. Dieses Stück wird passend zu Weihnachten am 23. Dezember 2012 im iTunes Store zum Preis von 0,99 € als Download erhältlich sein.
