Stocks Are Slightly Higher; Amazon Stops Selling Fire Phone

While Apple (AAPL) updated its smartphone, Amazon (AMZN) announced plans to discontinue its own. Amazon has sold through its inventory of the Fire Phone and said it does not plan to continue production. The Fire Phone had received poor reviews upon its release in 2014 and has since suffered weak demand. Stocks saw slight gains by the middle of the session, looking to take back some of losses suffered a day earlier. Major benchmark indexes had dropped more than 1% on Wednesday as a selloff in crude hit the energy sector hard. U.S. oilers added nearly triple the amount of crude to stockpiles over the past week. Crude inventories increased by 2.6 million barrels, far higher than an expected increase of nearly one million.
